Maria Raga, Depop’s former VP of Operations, was named CEO of Depop in 2016. Originally from Valencia, Spain, Raga previously worked at Groupon from 2010-2014, where she did a variety of things from recruiting to sales, most notably launching Groupon’s travel vertical in the UK market. Prior to that, Raga was the Head of Business Development at Privalia, a private online sales business in Spain, Italy and Brazil similar to Gilt Groupe in the US. Before getting into the e-commerce space, Raga worked for 5 years as a senior consultant for global management company Bain & Company, and she holds an MBA from Insead (International Business School in France and Singapore).
As Depop’s CEO, Raga is involved in virtually all aspects of the company, from finances to engineering, growth, marketing and product. Today, Depop has over 7 million users worldwide and 2.5 million sessions a day. An average of 1.9 million items are uploaded a month, and an item sells every 5 seconds. There are 90+ employees in its London, Milan, and Brooklyn offices. In addition to working with these teams, Raga works closely alongside Depop’s founder, Simon Beckerman, to make sure his original vision—to empower individuals to bring creativity to the world—is being executed efficiently.
In her time at the helm of Depop, Raga has already raised over $8M in funding during an especially complicated time with Brexit, market fluctuations and elections. That said, her biggest achievement is raising her two young children. “I don’t think I’ve done anything that I could be more proud of,” she says.
The only female mobile selling CEO, Raga is looking forward to scaling Depop’s success and building a product that continues to be a place where users can lose themselves discovering the things they’re passionate about. “The mission of Depop is to inspire people to find the things they love,” she explains, “so we want to build this massive marketplace that anyone in the world can have access to. We want to expand to anybody who is passionate about something, and have them be inspired by us.”
She lives in London with her husband and two children.
